Derek Bird, known as locally as ïBirdyÍ, was a father, grandfather, brother, and son, described as a popular but quiet man. He worked as a self-__employed taxi driver in the North of England and looked after his elderly mother. He got on well with other taxi drivers, who still describe him as a friend. A local woman, said he was regularly around the town, and fairly popular. But one morning Derek woke up early and shot his twin brother David and his family's solicitor, before continuing a shooting spree that hit 24 people, and killed 12. The rampage only came to an end when Bird took his own life at a Lake District Beauty spot.

He had almost been convicted of trying to drown his wife, but police were forced to drop the charges. A woman was found dead in his flat, having apparently been beaten, but police found she had died of natural causes. However, in 2002 his luck would run out, when the bodies of 2 women were found discarded in a rubbish bin. We talk to his friends and neighbours who would be shocked to learn that the man they trusted could commit such appalling crimes.
